Job Title: Vegetation Planner

Under the supervision of the Vegetation Manager and Vegetation Lead Arborist this position will be responsible and accountable for the completion of in-field vegetation annual plan and all line clearance activities in their area.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and assess vegetation in the Right off-Way for compliance standards and construction work plans
  • Communicate the reasons and benefits of utility vegetation line clearance to property owners
  • Notify property owners of vegetation clearance work to be performed
  • Assist with permitting for DOT, railroads, and municipalities etc.
  • Travel to assist across all regions
  • Handle customer complaints related to the scheduled work and/or completed pruning
  • Check trees for hazard or danger potential
  • Communicate daily with the foresters, contractors, and general public
  • Document information for vegetation management program using GIS based software and Microsoft
  • Perform duties in a manner that will promote and maintain good public relations
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Safety and Environmental knowledge.
  • Able to obtain and maintain security access from customer and work unescorted on customer related properties, substation and ROW’s at all times.
  • Work within all applicable safety rules.
  • Wear all required PPE, which includes but not limited to: FR Clothing, Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Safety Toed Boots, Harness.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • General knowledge of utility vegetation management equipment (bucket/manual crew equipment, mowers, off-road tree removal equipment, herbicide application methods & equipment).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate vegetation clearing in conjunction with line rebuilds and new construction, including but not limited to:
  • Experience with aerial and ground inspections.
  • Familiar with FAC-003-1 and -2 NERC vegetation standards.
  • Strong computer skills, including but not limited to:
    • working knowledge of GIS based software programs
    • Microsoft toolkit
    • planning software
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively and accurately.
  • Be available during off-duty hours.
  • Familiar and able to use Microsoft and ITC software.
  • Able to work and retain access to all ITC related ROW’s, stations and facilities.

Education & Experience

  • Associates (or Higher) of Science in Forestry or other related field.
  • 5+ years of utility vegetation management experience.
  • ISA Certified Arborist obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • ISA Utility Specialist certification preferred.

Pre-Screen

  • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.

License & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • RARE (up to 10%): climbing ladders, climbing stairs
  • OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): balancing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • FREQUENT (up to 66 %): standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, body twisting, crawling, sense of touch, manual dexterity, speaking clearly, seeing distant, climbing on/off truck, climbing poles, seeing, reading, reaching, range of motion, hearing-speech range, depth perception, color vision, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling.
  • CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): lifting up to 10 lbs.

Safety

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.

  • Must work in close proximity of energized electrical equipment up to 345,000 volts.
  • Works around hazardous equipment.
  • Works with energized parts or equipment.
  • May be subjected to high intensity and stressful situations.
  • Work in all temperatures (cold, snow, ice, wind, rain, heat).
  • Exposed to traffic and mobile equipment.
  • Works on construction sites with uneven terrain.
  • May be exposed to nature, i.e. irritating plants and biting or stinging insects.
  • Work may be performed at varying heights above ground and/or in confined spaces.
